wxGlade Perl and SVN

Accidentally i discoverd wxGlade being installed on my EeePc. Since i knew wx is some kind of toolkit for creating gui’s i tested it. And… wow!

Its great to create some kind of raw mask for your application. Even it threw some errors first (had to correct some mistakes in the generated Perl code) it creates quite clean code.

I will use it for my Jukebox Project, in which i made a major step forward today: Sound works. Okay, not good, i have to dump mpg123 stdout to /dev/dsp via pipe, anything else doesnt work, but anyway, i have sound (Alice Cooper was the first song ;) )

Another thing: I had to search like hours for a useful documentation for wxperl. Maybe useful for others: wxWidgets Doc is useful even for wxperl.

Ahh, and I set up a SVN Repo today. I will post further information if some useful software finds its way to it.

Fujitsu B112 Lifebook + Scrubs + Jukebox

I spend my weekend doing several things:

  1. Chilling with some pals (and a PS³ and a subwoofer greater than my 22″ lcd)
  2. Watching Scrubs (Season 1 to 5)
  3. Setting up Debian on a battery-damaged non USB bootable non cdrom drive Fujitsu Biblo B112 Lifebook

Since it was just capable of booting from floppy i had to use the debian floppies. After like 2-3 Hours with errors like (attention: keyword!) pcmcia: unknown symbol release_firmware etc. I switched from Debian Lenny Install Floppies to Etch. And hooray, it works!

But its annoying to do a dist-upgrade to lenny with a 10mbit nic, a 233mhz cpu and 160Megs of stupid slow SDRAM. Anyway, it runs with Fluxbox.

The touchscreen (its like the grandfather of a hybride of the GeCube Genie Senior and my EeePC) is hard to configure, if anyone knows a good calibration gui, please tell me :-P

So, I plan to use it as a jukebox for parties. Therefore I need the following:

  • A way to disable gui stuff for closing windows, maximising them, almost everything.
  • An audioplayer which has the following features:
    • Comfortable Song Index which can be used only with touchscreen
    • Queueing songs in a queue
    • A Perl API? (That would be… greatest)
    • Lightweight

Officialy out of (u)buntu

Today, I threw Ubuntu of my (big, clobby, stupid, nonbatteried, nonEee) laptop and installed my Debian Lenny.
Why? Because Ubuntu sucks. Why? Because its slow. And I thought:

Now that you got a local apt mirror… why not use it on all linux machines?

Install was quite easy. Kernel 2.6.24 runs fine aswell. Compiz doesnt, nor does screensaver. But thats nothing I hadnt have with ubuntu.

Maybe I’ll retry Ubuntu 8. But never 7.10 again.

eeepc-fancontrol 0.11 released + gcode

Today I created a google code project for eeepc-fancontrol. The projects home page is located at

Main aim for this daemon is to compensate the crappy hardware fancontrol by manually adjusting the fan speed via the eee.ko module according to the temperature.

There’s a nice article at the eeepc-linux projects wiki which explains why this hardware fan control is crap.

The daemon is written in Perl and needs some major adjustments like an init script (which is almost ready to be published) and an action for SIGTERM to reset fan_manual to 0

Debian, Alsa, Samin - Heater und verschwendete Nächte

Nun bin ich momentan dabei zum Spaß einen Server wieder in Betrieb zu nehmen, meinen alten GameServer. Zusammengeklaubt aus alten Geräten ist nun ein ganz solider AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 2gig DDR 400 RAM und insgesamt 600gb Speicher entstanden. Schon fast übertrieben, nicht? ^^

Jedenfalls hält mich seit einigen Wochen ein Problem wach, und zwar die Tatsache, dass mir der Computer mit zwei Mainboards den Stereo Sound verweigert und mir nur den linken Kanal liefert.
Nach etwa zigtausend mal Kernel compilieren, hundert mal alsaconf etc etcist mir eben (mit Hilfe aus #debian-de ;) ) das Problem sprichwörtlich wie Schuppen von den Augen gefallen: Der Jumper für den rechten Kanal war nicht drin. Warum auch immer nur der rechte, nicht der linke… Bei beiden Mainboards das gleiche.

Unglaublich viel Zeit für so etwa simples. Das kommt vom Problem Abstrahieren…. Verschiedene Hardware, gleiche Software… wo sucht man auch zu erst?

Meine Ubuntu CD’s sind da!

Vor zwei Wochen (Ubuntu CD Order) hab ich mir aus Spaß mal bei shipit.ubuntu.com ne Ubuntu 7.10 CD bestellt, Canonical bieten diese aus PR Gründen kostenlos (auch Shipping) an. Tja, heute kam die CD mit der Post. Und ich muss sagen, klasse Aufmachung, mit 4 Stickern (siehe Screenshots) und nem hübschen PaperCase.

BTW: Canonical’s Gründer Mark Shuttleworth hat auch das FreedomToaster Projekt ins Leben gerufen, dessen Ziel es ist, in Internet-Infrastruktur schwachen Gebieten Automaten aufzustellen, bei denen man sich eine eigene Kollektion an OpenSourceSoftware zusammenstellen und auf CD brennen kann.

Die Idee ansich finde ich gut, in Birkenfeld steht mittlerweile ein ähnlicher Automat, der FlyingToaster.
Wenn man die vorgeschlagene Umsetzung etwas vernachlässigt, lässt sich das ganze sicherlich auch ohne kostspieligen TouchScreen, sondern mit einer Maus (!), realisieren.

Ansich ne klasse Idee für Schulen, die ein wenig OpenSource Feeling an ihre WinSchüler weitergeben wollen ;)

EEE PC - Streitpunkte

Da sowohl Asus als auch die Reseller uns bis jetzt dürftig mit Informationen versorgen, und ich auch noch keinen wirklich vertrauenswürdigen Testbericht sowohl aus Osteuropa als auch aus Fernost gelesen habe, kann ich nur Streitpunkte die im Gespräch mit anderen IT’s aufkamen aufzählen.

So bemängeln die Russen, die einen komplett russischen angeblich ausführlichen Bericht schrieben, davon, die Akkulaufzeit betrüge rund 150minuten, das wären 2:30h, knapp eine Stunde weniger als Heise Mobile getestet haben will.

Weiterhin schreiben sie in ihrem Bericht, der RAM sei nicht austauschbar festgelötet, der erste Shop in Deutschland verkauft ihn jedoch bereits modular mit von ASUS her nie erwähnten optionalen 2 Gigabyte RAM.

Was mich gerade an der Linux Szene wundert, es scheint sich noch niemand näher damit beschäftigt zu haben (sollte ich irren, korrigiert mich). Ich weiß bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht, ob es sich um ein Xandros Linux (Heise Mobil, 3. Absatz) oder ein Debian 4.0 (ASUS Support, + Others!) handelt.

Die ersten beiden Streitpunkte lösen sich meiner Meinung nach in Luft aus, sobald man erfährt, dass die Russen ein absolutes Vorabmodell getestet haben (woher auch immer), welches scheinbar über niedrigere Akkulaufzeiten und festgelötete RAM Chips verfügt.

Die Lösung des letzten Problems liegt auf der Hand:
Man bräuchte jemanden der den E³ jetzt schon aus den Staaten hat,
oder jemanden der sich den europäischen/deutschen E³ zulegt und mal genauer hinter die Software guckt.

Denn die Angabe, es handle sich um ein Linux ist in etwa so präzise wie die Angabe Windows 3.1-Vista möglich
